Brazil STJ limits state-funded medical treatment abroad to exceptional cases

The Superior Tribunal de Justiça ruled that the public health system (SUS) is not obligated to fund foreign medical treatments unless no effective domestic alternative exists. The decision establishes that the constitutional right to health does not grant patients a subjective right to access superior foreign technology or experimental procedures.
