Pentagon suppliers report inability to meet 2027 domestic rare earth magnet production targets

U.S. defense contractors have informed the administration that domestic rare earth processing and magnet manufacturing capacity will remain insufficient by the January 2027 deadline. The administration is now considering extending exemptions for Chinese-sourced materials to prevent critical supply chain gaps in defense production.
