First patient receives gene-edited insulin-producing cell transplant without immunosuppression

A patient with type 1 diabetes has successfully received a transplant of gene-edited cells designed to produce insulin without requiring concurrent immunosuppressive therapy. While this represents a significant clinical milestone, the long-term efficacy and safety of the gene-editing technique remain to be established through further trials.
