Russia vetoes US-drafted MINURSO resolution, reopening Western Sahara dispute

Russia vetoed a US-drafted UN Security Council resolution on MINURSO, blocking its renewal and reopening the Western Sahara file. The move pits Moroccan claims of victory against concerns of a UN overstep, leaving the mission's future and the political process uncertain. This marks a significant shift in the Security Council's handling of the decades-old dispute.

UN MINURSO Mission Ends, Western Sahara Conflict Escalation Risk Rises

The UN Security Council failed to renew the mandate of MINURSO, the peacekeeping mission in Western Sahara, leading to its termination after 35 years. This development, primarily due to a Russian veto of a US-drafted resolution, removes the international monitoring presence and significantly increases the risk of renewed hostilities between Morocco and the Polisario Front. Morocco views this as a diplomatic victory, while the Polisario Front and Algeria express concern over the heightened volatility.
