MINURSO Mandate Ends, Western Sahara Conflict Escalation Risk

The UN Security Council failed to renew the mandate of MINURSO, the mission monitoring the 1991 ceasefire in Western Sahara, following a Russian veto of a US-drafted resolution. This unprecedented termination removes the international monitoring presence, increasing the risk of renewed hostilities between Morocco and the Polisario Front. The exact reasons for Russia's veto and the full implications for regional stability remain uncertain.
