UK ONS: Longer ED stays linked to lower post-discharge employment and higher readmission risk

New ONS analysis of England 2021-2025 data finds a correlation between total time spent in emergency departments and worse outcomes: lower likelihood of post-discharge employment and higher risk of hospitalisation. The causal mechanism is uncertain, but the findings suggest ED crowding may have downstream socioeconomic and health consequences. This is a statistical release, not an intervention study, so inference is limited.
