Brazil's Central Bank Drex digital currency project enters holding pattern

The Banco Central do Brasil has paused the Drex digital currency initiative following the conclusion of its second pilot phase in November 2025. While the project successfully tested smart contracts and digital bond transactions with 55 participants, the transition to a broader rollout remains stalled, shifting the immediate development focus toward private sector initiatives.
