US, Japan to rehearse southwest island defense in Keen Sword exercise

US and Japanese forces will conduct integrated air/missile defense, amphibious, and island reinforcement drills in Japan's southwest islands during Keen Sword, Oct 19-29. The exercise continues an annual pattern since 1985, but the focus on southwest islands signals deterrence posture against China. The scale and specific units involved are not yet fully disclosed.
