Peru's Cusco region: 280 forest fires, five dead, six still active

Cusco region has recorded nearly 280 forest fires this year, causing five fatalities, with six emergencies still active. The regional emergency operations center (COER) noted that three of the deceased were elderly individuals who likely started the burns, urging families not to leave them unattended. The scale and ongoing nature of the fires indicate a significant environmental and public-safety challenge, though the exact causes and full extent of damage remain unclear.
