Becerra favored to become California's first Latino governor in modern era

Xavier Becerra, current U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary, is the heavy favorite in the 2026 California gubernatorial race, which would make him the state's first Latino governor in the modern era. He has not emphasized the historic nature of the milestone. The outcome is uncertain until the election, but his frontrunner status signals a potential shift in California's political leadership.
